Shielding Gas

Shielding gases are inert or semi-inert (gas mixtures) gases that are used in welding processes to prevent contamination of the weld pool by the atmosphere. Selection of the correct gas can have a dramatic effect on the weld quality, productivity and overall cost efficiency.

Our SouthernShield™ range of gases are blended specifically to fit your welding requirements, which includes Light (for thinner gauge material), CO2GAR (universal mixture) Heavy (heavy gauge), Stainless (3 component mixture for low alloy steel) and Aluminium (2 component mixture).

Our SouthernLaser™ certified assist gas mixtures are custom blended to suit the Laser manufacturer’s specifications, these include Laser 40 and 71. High purity gases are also available for Laser machines that blend on-site (Helium, Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide).

Laser shielding/assist gases, nitrogen and oxygen are also available.

Welding gases


Acetylene: a colourless, flammable gas with a garlic-like odour. Combustion with oxygen achieves a flame temperature of 3087° C) allowing it to be used in a variety of metal working applications like cutting, welding, brazing, and soldering.

Argon: a colourless, odourless, non-toxic, non-flammable, inert gas primarily used in applications that include arc welding, steel making and heat-treating.

Carbon Dioxide: a non-flammable, colourless, odourless gas available in high pressure compressed gas cylinders, liquid withdrawal cylinders, and bulk liquid Dewars.

Oxygen: makes up approximately 21% of air it is a colourless, odourless gas that readily supports combustion.

Nitrogen: makes up approximately 78% of air. Nitrogen is often used as an inert gas because of its "non-reactive nature" with many materials.

LPG: main component is propane, a colourless, flammable, liquefied gas. Pure propane is odourless however; methyl mercaptan is added giving it a distinctive "smell". Propane is primarily used in heating applications and as forklift fuel although it is widely used for heating and cutting in heavy steel fabrication.

To provide you with the most economical gas packaging options all industrial gases are available in standard high-pressure cylinders or bulk gas pallets (16 cylinders) along with liquid Dewar’s (where applicable).
